Holly Zandbergen
Holly Zandbergen is an expressionist painter who creates heavily textured oil paintings that are derived from an authentic human response. She uses paint as a medium to explore the kindred connection that exists between mark-making and intent. Variables such as speed, force and motion activate endless possibilities within each mark. Painting has become experiential in the sense that it is through the act of painting that meaning is found. Whether the subject be that of the internal world of the artist or a literal form of the external world, it is the very translation of thought to form that ignites life within the painting.
Originally from Timaru, Holly gained notable recognition as an emerging artist early on in her career where she was awarded in 2015 the Best Young Artist award at the National Open Art competition at the Royal College of Art in London. This saw her gain representation with Rebecca Hossack in London for several years where she exhibited in art fairs such as Art Toronto, Seattle Art Fair, Hong Kong Affordable Art Fair and Context New York. Since returning to New Zealand in 2016, she has regularly held exhibitions in Auckland, Christchurch and Arrowtown. She now lives in Christchurch.
